Student Protests Erupt in Serbia; Novi Sad Mourns Train Tragedy Victims

Thousands of students marched in protest through the streets of Kragujevac, Serbia, on Saturday, February 15. Simultaneously, a large demonstration of government supporters took place in Sremska Mitrovica.

On February 1, 2024, a concrete overhang collapsed at the central railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 15 fatalities aged between six and 74 years.

Following the tragedy in Novi Sad, protests began and spread to other Serbian cities. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Novi Sad's mayor and Prime Minister Milos Vucevic. Vucevic announced his resignation on January 28, citing the tragedy and the injury of a student during protests as reasons for his decision. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the protests do not concern him.
