China's Energy Sector Sees Record Fossil Fuel Production Amid Shift to Clean Energy

On January 17, 2025, data from China's National Bureau of Statistics revealed that fossil fuel power generation in the country reached an all-time high in 2024. This increase occurred despite a surge in clean energy initiatives, which have not kept pace with the rising electricity demand in the world's second-largest economy.

Electricity output from thermal plants, primarily coal-fired, rose by 1.5% from the previous year. The electricity sector remains the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in China.

Additionally, China reported record production levels for various commodities in 2024, including coal, gas, and aluminum. While steel production saw a decline, it remained above 1 billion tons for the fifth consecutive year. These statistics underscore the ongoing emphasis on energy security within China's policy framework, reflecting the nation's efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports.

However, the data also indicates a contraction in traditional sectors as the Chinese government aims to foster greener industries to supplant property and state-led investments as the primary growth drivers.
