FBI Warns of Disinformation Campaign Targeting U.S. Elections Amid Ongoing Threats

On November 5, 2024, the FBI reported two instances of its insignia being misused in viral videos spreading false information about the upcoming elections. One video falsely claimed that the FBI had advised voters to 'vote remotely' due to potential terrorist threats, while another fabricated a press release alleging collusion between prisons in key swing states and a political party to rig inmate voting.

The FBI clarified that these videos are not authentic and do not reflect the actual threat landscape or polling safety. The bureau has not assigned responsibility for these disinformation efforts. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of viral misinformation, especially during critical electoral periods.

In response to potential threats, the FBI is collaborating with various partners at a national election command post located at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. This initiative aims to ensure preparedness against threats impacting election security, including criminal threats, foreign influence, cyber risks, and domestic violence.

Furthermore, a joint statement released by the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency indicated that foreign adversaries, particularly Russia, have been observed engaging in influence operations intended to undermine public confidence in U.S. elections. The agencies noted that Russia is currently the most active threat, employing disinformation tactics to create fear and division among American voters.

The intelligence community anticipates that Russian disinformation efforts will persist beyond the election day, with indications suggesting a preference for former President Donald Trump’s victory, in contrast to Iran’s apparent support for Vice President Kamala Harris.
