Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te Addresses National Security Amid Chinese Military Exercises

On October 14, 2024, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, labeled a "troublemaker" by Beijing, convened a national security meeting in response to large-scale military maneuvers conducted by China around the island. In a Facebook message, Lai reassured Taiwanese citizens that the government would continue to protect the democratic constitutional system and safeguard national security.

Lai criticized China's military exercises, stating they aim to undermine peace and stability in the region and involve military coercion against neighboring countries, which he noted is inconsistent with international expectations. He emphasized Taiwan's commitment to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait and expressed a desire for equal and respectful dialogue with China.

The national security meeting included high-level officials such as Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, Defense Minister Wellington Koo, and National Security Council Secretary General Joseph Wu. Lai stated that the Taiwanese government is closely monitoring Chinese military movements and is fully aware of the situation, while also emphasizing the importance of public welfare and social stability.

These remarks followed China's announcement of military exercises named Joint Sword-2024B, which simulate a blockade and control of key ports and areas in Taiwan, as well as attacks on naval and land targets. Chinese authorities indicated that these maneuvers are intended to tighten control over the island and demonstrate their capability to counter any separatist attempts.

The military drills involve ground, naval, air, and rocket forces, resembling those conducted by China in May around Taiwan, which Beijing claims sovereignty over. Chinese officials warned that further countermeasures would be taken against Taiwan if secessionist forces continue provocations, aiming for the "complete reunification" of the country.

In response to President Lai's statements, the Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) warned that every independence provocation would receive a stronger response, asserting that the exercises directly target Taiwan's independence efforts and serve as a warning to the island's authorities.

This marks the fifth instance of such military maneuvers by China since 2022, following a significant increase in tensions after former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
