Mozambique's Ruling Party FRELIMO Leads Presidential Election Results Amid Youth Discontent

On October 13, 2024, preliminary results from Mozambique's recent general elections indicate that the ruling party, FRELIMO, is likely to extend its nearly five-decade rule. Daniel Chapo, the party's candidate and a former provincial governor, secured approximately 70% of the votes in 30 out of 154 districts, according to the electoral commission.

In specific provincial results, the FRELIMO party and Chapo emerged victorious in both Maputo and Cabo Delgado provinces. In Maputo, Chapo garnered 53.68% of the presidential votes, followed by Venâncio Mondlane from the PODEMOS party at 33.84%, Ossumo Momade from RENAMO with 9.62%, and Lutero Simango from MDM at 2.86%.

In Cabo Delgado, Chapo achieved 65.81% of the votes, totaling 281,507, while Mondlane received 22.64%. The legislative elections also reflected FRELIMO's dominance, with the party obtaining 66.44% of the votes for parliamentary seats.

The elections were notable as they marked the seventh presidential elections in Mozambique, with the current president, Filipe Nyusi, not seeking re-election due to term limits. The official announcement of the presidential election results will occur within 15 days, pending any potential second-round voting.
