UN Warns of Food Crisis in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Challenges in Lebanon

On October 11, 2024, the United Nations reported that the World Food Programme (WFP) has been unable to deliver food to Gaza since October 1, resulting in a critical situation where one million people could be deprived of food. WFP spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized that the last food reserves in northern Gaza are nearly exhausted, with distribution points and bakeries facing closure due to ongoing conflict.

In southern Gaza, food distribution has ceased, and bakeries are struggling to secure wheat flour, vital for the Palestinian diet. Haq highlighted that humanitarian aid entering Gaza is at its lowest level in months, and without a resumption of aid, the food crisis will worsen.

In Lebanon, the humanitarian situation is dire following intensified Israeli attacks on Hezbollah, resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement. As of now, around 608,000 people are displaced, with many seeking refuge in makeshift shelters. However, these shelters are quickly filling up, creating a severe housing crisis.

Local initiatives are emerging as Lebanese citizens step up to assist those affected, with donations being distributed to shelters and schools. International humanitarian aid is also increasing, with the arrival of supplies from the European Union and medical assistance from the United Arab Emirates. Nonetheless, observers warn that political interests are influencing the humanitarian response, raising concerns about the future of aid distribution.
