UAE Launches Off-Grid Solar EV Charger

October 15, 2024, UAE – Emirates Transport has partnered with Al Ghandi Auto to install a solar-powered, off-grid electric vehicle (EV) charging station at its Dubai headquarters. This initiative was announced during Gitex Global 2024, emphasizing the UAE's sustainability goals.

This charging station will be the first of its kind in the UAE, operating entirely on solar energy. The solar panels will generate up to 22 kW, allowing a standard Chevrolet Bolt to charge to 80% in approximately 1.5 hours.

The collaboration aims to create a self-sufficient energy ecosystem, reducing reliance on external power and promoting renewable energy adoption in the region. A six-month trial period will assess the station's efficiency, with potential plans for expansion based on the results.

The UAE targets increasing the share of EVs on its roads from 3% in 2023 to 50% by 2050, aligning with its net-zero emissions goal. Al Ghandi Auto, a leading automotive retail group, is expanding its offerings to include advanced off-grid EV chargers, supporting the development of EV infrastructure in the UAE.

Dominic Hagerty, Chief Transport and Lease Officer at Emirates Transport, stated that this agreement sets a new standard for corporate sustainability, while Buti Saeed Mohammed Al Ghandi emphasized the viability of off-grid solar EV chargers as a sustainable solution.
