Cambodia is on the cusp of launching 5G internet technology, with the government aiming to leverage its potential for digital government, digital citizenship, and digital businesses. This move is expected to drive digital transformation across the country's economy and society.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that the country is currently considering the optimal time for the official rollout of the 5G system. He emphasized the technology's role in supporting digital government initiatives, empowering citizens, and fostering digital businesses.

Cheang Sopheak, Director-General of the Ministry's Directorate General of Radio Frequency Spectrum Management, highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology, emphasizing its ability to deliver ultra-fast data speeds, low latency, and seamless connectivity. He explained that 5G will enable innovations such as 3D and Ultra HD video streaming, smart home and smart city applications, and next-generation gaming experiences.

The government is allocating the 3.5 GHz frequency band for 5G deployment, which is expected to achieve peak download speeds of 20 Gbps and an average download speed of 100 Mbps. This will significantly improve connectivity across the country.

While Cambodia is making steady progress towards 5G deployment, challenges remain, including interference with Vietnamese satellites in the 3.5 GHz band and delays in freeing up the 700 MHz spectrum. The Ministry is actively addressing these challenges through cross-border coordination, technical shielding measures, and expediting the digital TV transition.

The government has addressed public concerns regarding potential health risks associated with electromagnetic waves from mobile phone antennas. Prime Minister Hun Sen assured citizens that there is no scientific evidence linking mobile phone antennas to health risks, citing studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
