China's DeepSeek Launches AI Model to Compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT

Editado por: Veronika Radoslavskaya

The launch of a new artificial intelligence model by China's DeepSeek has raised concerns in the U.S. This model, part of the R1 family, boasts 671 billion parameters and is designed to rival OpenAI's most powerful systems.

DeepSeek's R1 model is notable for its ability to run on standard laptops, enhancing accessibility. In tests, it has outperformed OpenAI's flagship model in mathematical reasoning and coding.

One key feature of the R1 is its simulated reasoning approach, allowing it to mimic human thought processes for complex problem-solving. The model operates under an MIT open license, enabling developers to analyze and modify it commercially.

However, when deployed from China, the model must comply with local regulations, limiting its responses on sensitive topics like Taiwan's independence. Running the model outside China can bypass these restrictions, making it appealing for international developers.

DeepSeek's advancements contribute to China's growing influence in the global AI landscape, challenging the dominance of OpenAI and other Western firms.
