The United Nations, Microsoft, and Kenya's Ministry of Information launched a digital and artificial intelligence center in Nairobi, aimed at training 100,000 African public servants. The Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub and Africa Centre for Competence for AI and Digital Skilling is designed to enhance the skills necessary for the digital transformation of government services.
U.N. Development Program Regional Director Ahunna Eziakonwa emphasized that improved digital skills will facilitate technological progress in Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto noted that over 20,000 government services are now accessible online, streamlining public service delivery and enhancing transparency.
Despite the advancements, challenges such as power outages and limited computer experience among some workers remain. Governance experts highlight that online services have increased citizen trust in public institutions, making government operations more efficient.
Michael Niyitegeka, a software academy leader, urged authorities to ensure that public servants effectively utilize these technologies to avoid potential pitfalls in implementation.
