Nigerian Minister Calls for Responsible AI Adoption to Enhance Business Growth

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Nigeria's Minister of Labour and Employment, urged human resources professionals to adopt a proactive approach to artificial intelligence (AI) for optimizing business and human capital development. This call was made during the 5th anniversary celebration of ITM Services Nigeria in Lagos, themed 'Sustainability in the AI era: Business growth and employee retention in Nigeria.'

Onyejeocha emphasized that effective AI adoption can significantly improve business growth and employee retention, creating a better working environment. She encouraged professionals to leverage AI creatively to foster equitable and sustainable futures for all Nigerians.

Highlighting the potential of AI to reshape the future of work, she cautioned that its adoption must be responsible and collaborative. She stated, 'While much of the conversation around AI focuses on technology's ability to drive economic growth, we must also consider its impact on environmental and social sustainability.'

Onyejeocha advocated for sustainable development to be central to AI strategies, ensuring that technology promotes economic progress, social equity, and environmental stewardship. She noted that AI could address pressing sustainability challenges, such as reducing carbon emissions and optimizing resource use.

During a panel discussion, Stanley Eluwa from Promasidor remarked that Nigerian businesses have yet to fully embrace AI capabilities. Stella Obialor from VIISAUS called for a collaborative approach to AI adoption, while Omotola Adedapo from Sterling Financial Holdings emphasized the need for employees to evolve their skills in response to AI integration.
