Severe Cold Expected in India

As winter approaches, India is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet confirmed the specifics, but the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has forecasted colder than average conditions this winter. Residents are advised to prepare for extreme cold and heavy rainfall.

The WMO indicates that the La Niña phenomenon will influence weather patterns from December 2024 to February 2025, potentially resulting in colder and more intense winter conditions across India. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates a 60% chance of La Niña's activation, which could persist until March 2025.

Although the IMD has cautioned that previous international forecasts have often been inaccurate, the WMO's prediction suggests a significant temperature drop in northern and central India from November to February. This could lead to severe cold in the Delhi-NCR region.

Following Diwali, an increase in fog and cold is anticipated in Delhi-NCR. While clear weather is expected until October 29, temperatures may rapidly decline afterward. Snowfall is also possible in hilly states during November, as the monsoon withdrawal has been delayed. In the capital, the air quality index (AQI) has reached 334, indicating poor air quality. Rainfall is also forecasted in parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

This year, India has already faced extreme heat, followed by heavy rainfall, and now the onset of severe cold. Preparations for this winter are deemed essential.
