Major Rainfall Forecast in BC, Oct 19, 2024

Environment Canada has issued heightened rainfall warnings for British Columbia as Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, and coastal regions prepare for significant downpours over the weekend.

The first atmospheric river of the season is anticipated to deliver up to 120 millimeters of rain to western and inland Vancouver Island on Saturday, coinciding with the provincial election, and continuing into Sunday.

Forecasts indicate that 150 millimeters of rain is expected near the coast of Vancouver Island, with mountainous areas potentially receiving over 250 millimeters.

Metro Vancouver and the Sea-to-Sky corridor are also predicted to see up to 150 millimeters, while the North Shore Mountains may experience precipitation exceeding 180 millimeters.

The atmospheric river is set to affect southern B.C.'s interior as well, with prolonged heavy rainfall expected to persist through Sunday.

Flood watches have been issued by the River Forecast Centre for various rivers along the central and southern coasts, Lower Fraser tributaries, and waterways in Metro Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.

Additionally, Environment Canada has maintained snow warnings for Watson Lake, Fort Nelson, and the Cassiar Mountains, forecasting between 15 to 25 centimeters of snow, which may hinder driving conditions.
