A baby gorilla, named 'Zeytin' after a social media campaign, is undergoing rehabilitation at a zoo in Istanbul following its rescue from illegal smuggling. Found in a cage on a flight from Nigeria to Bangkok on December 22, Zeytin is a critically endangered western gorilla, now thriving in a specially created environment.

Initially discovered in poor health, Zeytin has shown remarkable improvement, gaining weight and height since its arrival. Caregivers report that the once fearful gorilla now plays actively with toys, reflecting a restored sense of security.

Fahrettin Ulu, a regional director of Turkey's Nature Conservation and National Parks, emphasized the importance of wildlife protection, revealing that nearly 10,000 reports of injured animals were received in 2024. The ministry is in discussions with international organizations regarding Zeytin's future, aiming for a return to its native rainforest habitat.

Veterinarian Gülfem Eşmen noted that Zeytin has developed strong bonds with its caretakers, treating them as family. The gorilla's diet is carefully managed, consisting of milk, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, ensuring its continued health and happiness.

Zeytin's story highlights the ongoing challenges of wildlife trafficking and the importance of global efforts to protect endangered species.
