Israel Launches First Offshore National Marine Park to Protect Biodiversity and Heritage

In a landmark decision, Israel has announced the establishment of its first offshore national marine park off the coast of Caesarea, aimed at preserving both natural and archaeological treasures. This initiative coincides with the expansion of the Evtach Marine Reserve, which will now protect a larger area of the Mediterranean Sea between Ashdod and Ashkelon.

The new marine park is designed to safeguard the antiquities of the ancient Caesarea port located underwater, enhancing public access to these historical treasures through activities like diving and snorkeling. This marks a significant step towards recognizing the importance of marine ecosystems and their conservation.

Alongside the marine park, the Evtach Marine Reserve will extend its boundaries, now covering approximately 67,108 dunams (16,556 acres) of the Mediterranean. This reserve is crucial for protecting diverse marine habitats, including sandy and rocky seabeds rich in wildlife, and is home to important species such as the common dolphin.

In addition to marine conservation, Israel is also taking steps to protect terrestrial ecosystems. The Heart of the Ramon Crater Nature Reserve and National Park will cover 13,300 dunams (3,286 acres) in southern Israel, safeguarding a unique geological and ecological area previously threatened by mining activities.

These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to biodiversity conservation in Israel, recognizing the need to preserve both the natural environment and historical heritage for future generations.
