Marineland Closes, Relocation Plans for Animals

On January 5, Marineland in Antibes, the largest marine park in Europe, closed its doors permanently. The decision was attributed to a significant decline in visitor numbers and the new law prohibiting cetacean shows by 2026.

Park officials reassured that the top priority is to relocate all animals to suitable facilities. The last captive orcas, Wikie, 23, and her son Keijo, 11, have raised concerns, as reintroduction into the wild has been deemed unfeasible due to their long-term captivity.

A spokesperson mentioned that options are being explored within aquatic parks that meet European animal welfare standards, including a facility in Tenerife, Canary Islands. However, the organization One Voice criticized this plan, advocating instead for a transfer to a sanctuary in Nova Scotia, Canada.

In addition to the two orcas, the park houses dolphins, sharks, otters, flamingos, sea lions, turtles, fish, and corals. Most of the 4,000 animals will be sent to zoos or reserves as part of a massive relocation plan.
