Greece Launches New Tax Filing Process for 2025

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) in Greece has activated the Registry of Annual Income Tax Filing Obligations, marking the start of the new tax filing process for 2025. This will include income earned in the current year.

All public sector entities, including the Hellenic Parliament, ministries, social security funds, and regional authorities, must register in the Registry by January 15 via the AADE's digital portal, myAADE. They are required to declare responsible individuals for the timely submission of necessary data for pre-filling tax returns.

Failure to register on time will result in fines of €2,500 for responsible individuals, increasing by €50 for each day of delay. Private entities, such as banks, face fines up to €100,000.

The next step involves the accurate and timely submission of data concerning employee salaries, pensions, professional earnings, dividends, interest, and other relevant information.

The Ministry of Finance and AADE are intensifying efforts to ensure compliance with new tax filing deadlines for approximately 8 million taxpayers, with submissions required from March 15 to July 15, without extensions.

If the AADE does not activate the tax filing platform by March 15, penalties will be imposed on the director and responsible staff.

Additionally, taxpayers who pay their income tax in full by July 31 will receive discounts based on their filing date: 4% for submissions from March 15 to April 30, 3% from May 1 to June 15, and 2% from June 16 to July 15.

Income tax can be paid in eight equal monthly installments, with the first due by the end of July and subsequent payments due at the end of each following month. If a taxpayer fails to submit their return on time, the tax authority will estimate the tax based on available data.

For over 1.3 million taxpayers, primarily employees and pensioners, returns will be pre-filled and automatically submitted on April 16 if not modified.

Taxpayers who filed separately this year will not need to access the AADE platform until February 28, 2025, unless they wish to revoke their choice. Conversely, those who filed jointly and wish to separate for 2025 must notify the AADE by the end of February.
