A Dog-Friendly Twist at the Chelsea Flower Show

Next year’s Chelsea Flower Show will feature a unique dog-friendly garden, designed by Monty Don, known for his love of pets. This initiative aims to make the prestigious event more inclusive for dog lovers and families.

Monty Don, a familiar face on Gardeners' World, has shared his gardening journey with his beloved dogs. After the loss of his golden retrievers, Nigel and Nell, he now enjoys the company of a Yorkshire terrier named Patti and a new golden retriever puppy, Ned.

Traditionally, dogs have not been allowed at the Chelsea Flower Show, except for guide dogs. However, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is changing that with this new garden. Clare Matterson, the RHS director general, emphasized the goal to celebrate all types of gardeners, including dog lovers.

Monty's garden will feature a manicured lawn, perfect for dogs to roll, play, and relax. It will also include a large tree for shade and paths inspired by his own Longmeadow garden. Additionally, a dog-themed playlist curated by Radio 2’s Jo Whiley will play from a summerhouse in the garden.

Paths will be inscribed with the names of dogs belonging to Radio 2 presenters and RHS ambassadors, including Monty's own Ned. After the show, the garden will be relocated to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, where Queen Camilla's Jack Russell Terriers will also be honored.

Monty Don expressed his excitement, stating that this project is a fantastic opportunity to combine his passion for gardening and dogs. He aims to celebrate the bond many share with their furry friends in their gardens.
