On January 23, 2025, Germany and France will mark a significant advancement in their defense collaboration during a joint meeting focused on enhancing NATO's Eastern flank. This event, involving key defense officials from both nations, aims to implement decisions made by the Franco-German Security Council.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that parts of the binational brigade could be deployed in exercises conducted by the Multinational Corps Northeast. This initiative is designed to bolster Europe’s defense capabilities.
In addition to military exercises, the meeting will address the joint development of the next-generation battle tank, the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS). Representatives from the involved companies, including KNDS Germany, KNDS France, Rheinmetall, and Thales, are expected to sign a crucial agreement that paves the way for a joint project company.
Pistorius remarked, “The Franco-German engine is not stuttering. It is running, fueled by mutual deep trust.” This statement reflects the ongoing commitment to strengthen defense ties between the two nations.
As the meeting may be the last of its kind before the upcoming Bundestag elections, it holds particular significance. Pistorius also visited the recently restored Notre-Dame Cathedral, expressing admiration for the swift and remarkable restoration of this historic European monument.
