Osnabrück - A recent survey conducted by the forsa opinion research institute on behalf of the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (DBU) reveals that a significant majority of Germans favor the increased use of renewable energy sources rather than nuclear power to achieve greater energy independence and avoid supply shortages. This sentiment is particularly strong among younger adults aged 18 to 29 and seniors over 60.

According to the nationwide survey, 76 percent of respondents advocate for a stronger utilization of solar energy, while 70 percent support wind energy. Additionally, 66 percent of participants believe that hydrogen from renewable sources should play a crucial role in enhancing energy autonomy. In contrast, only 29 percent support nuclear energy, with even fewer backing gas (13 percent) or coal (5 percent).

DBU Secretary General Alexander Bonde emphasized the importance of the survey results, stating that the choice of energy sources in Germany is crucial due to geopolitical events. He referenced Germany's exit from nuclear energy in 2023 and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as significant factors influencing public opinion. Bonde asserted that the future of energy supply lies with renewable sources, which also ensure better environmental protection.

The survey highlighted differences in preferences among various age groups. Support for solar energy exceeded 70 percent across all demographics, with 79 percent of those aged 60 and above advocating for increased solar energy use. However, younger respondents led the charge for wind energy, with 78 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds supporting its expansion, compared to lower support among older groups.

Acceptance of coal as an energy source has dwindled significantly, particularly among those aged 45 to 59, where only 2 percent see it as a viable option for energy independence. The survey indicates a clear trend toward renewable energy as the preferred choice for the future.
