UN Unveils $1.42 Billion Plan for Somalia's Humanitarian Needs

MOGADISHU, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and humanitarian partners have launched the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), aiming to raise $1.42 billion to assist 4.6 million people in Somalia.

George Conway, deputy special representative of the UN Secretary General, urged the international community to provide urgent funding and resources, emphasizing the need to ensure that no one is left behind amid the ongoing crisis.

The 2025 HNRP promotes increased development and climate financing to tackle the root causes of humanitarian needs, enhance resilience, and mitigate the risk of future disasters.

Conway noted that food insecurity and malnutrition remain prevalent in Somalia due to recurring shocks. He affirmed the commitment to deliver lifesaving assistance, particularly to vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.

According to the UN, the humanitarian situation in Somalia showed slight improvements in 2024 compared to previous years marked by conflict, severe droughts, and flooding. These improvements are attributed to investments in early warning systems, preparedness, and enhanced collaboration between humanitarian organizations and local authorities, along with increased government response capacity.
