On July 17, 2025, Ukraine's parliament confirmed Yulia Svyrydenko as the country's new Prime Minister, following a significant government reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Svyrydenko, 39, previously served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Trade. Her appointment marks the first time in 15 years that a woman has held the position of Prime Minister in Ukraine.

In her new role, Svyrydenko is expected to focus on revitalizing Ukraine's economy and increasing domestic arms production. She has emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to strengthen the country's military capabilities and economic foundations. Outgoing Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who held the position for over five years, will transition to the role of Defense Minister, overseeing domestic weapons production and defense spending.

The reshuffle also includes other key appointments. Mykhailo Fedorov, 34, becomes First Deputy Prime Minister responsible for digital transformation, innovation, and technology, particularly in military tech. Taras Kachka is named Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, drawing on his experience in trade and economy. Oleksii Sobolev now leads the newly combined ministry covering economy, environment, and agriculture, crucial sectors for Ukraine's economic recovery. Svitlana Hrynchuk serves as Energy Minister, having previously focused on energy and climate change.

These changes aim to streamline ministries and manage wartime spending more effectively. President Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of deregulation, expanding economic cooperation with allies, and implementing stricter measures against threats to Ukraine's statehood. The new government is also expected to conduct a comprehensive audit of public finances to achieve significant budgetary savings and accelerate large-scale privatizations as part of broader economic reforms.

While the reshuffle has been welcomed by some, it has also faced criticism. Opposition lawmakers have expressed concerns that the consolidation of power within the presidential office could deepen executive control and undermine democratic processes. Despite these concerns, the new appointments reflect a strategic move to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and economic resilience amid ongoing challenges.
