CIDH Report Accuses Venezuelan Government of Human Rights Violations Ahead of Maduro's Third Term

On January 24, 2025, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) presented a report to the Organization of American States (OAS) detailing severe human rights violations in Venezuela related to the recent electoral process. The report, titled 'Venezuela: Serious Human Rights Violations in Relation to the Elections,' was delivered by CIDH rapporteur Gloria De Mees via videoconference.

The document claims that the Venezuelan government employed a repressive strategy during the electoral period, undermining institutions meant to protect human rights and democracy. The report alleges that this strategy has led to widespread impunity for security forces, significantly impacting governance and the enjoyment of human rights.

According to the report, following the presidential elections on July 28, the Maduro administration engaged in repression that included at least 25 killings, numerous brief enforced disappearances, around 2,000 arbitrary detentions, and instances of torture and inhumane treatment.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado described the CIDH report as 'conclusive,' asserting that it confirms the regime's use of state terrorism to stifle political opposition. She emphasized the systematic violations of human rights and called for global awareness and action against these atrocities.

Machado noted the strong support from democratic governments in the region, which she believes recognize the gravity of the situation in Venezuela. She urged the international community to remain vocal in demanding the release of political prisoners and a transition to democracy.
