Slovak Prime Minister Fico Threatens to Veto EU Decisions on Ukraine Amid Gas Transit Dispute

On January 20, 2025, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced his intention to veto European Union decisions concerning Ukraine if Kyiv does not resume the transit of Russian gas. This declaration follows Ukraine's decision to halt gas transit through its territory to the EU starting January 1, 2025, which has strained relations with Slovakia.

Fico stated he is prepared to impose political and economic sanctions to compel Ukraine to continue gas transportation to the EU. Despite the European Commission asserting that the cessation of gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine has not led to price increases or shortages, Fico claims Slovakia is losing approximately 500 million euros annually due to Ukraine's decision.

After discussions with EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in Brussels, Fico warned that Slovakia could cease humanitarian aid to Ukraine and interrupt emergency electricity supplies if gas transit is not resumed. He labeled Ukraine as an 'unreliable partner,' while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Fico for allegedly favoring Moscow.

Experts suggest that Fico's aggressive stance may be influenced by internal political instability in Slovakia, as his coalition has lost parliamentary strength. They argue that his pro-Russian rhetoric is aimed at solidifying support among his electorate, which has shown pro-Russian sentiments.

Fico's actions are viewed as potentially damaging to Slovakia's international standing and could lead to isolation within the EU and NATO. While previously supportive of Ukraine's EU accession, his current position may shift due to the evolving political landscape and personal motivations.

The situation has raised concerns about undermining principles of mutual support and solidarity within the EU, as well as facilitating Russian hybrid warfare against the bloc. However, it is anticipated that Fico's approach will face resistance from other European leaders and institutions.
