South Korean Court Extends Detention of Former President Amid Protests

On January 19, 2025, a South Korean court extended the detention of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been suspended from office for attempting to impose martial law. This decision allows prosecutors additional time to formalize charges of insurrection against him.

Following the court's announcement, approximately 44,000 supporters of Yoon gathered outside the courthouse in western Seoul, leading to confrontations with police. Protesters reportedly broke windows and attempted to breach the court's security, resulting in the arrest of 40 individuals for various offenses, including assaulting officers and attacking journalists.

Yoon, who was briefly detained under martial law declared on December 3, 2024, appeared in court for a hearing that lasted around five hours. The judges expressed concern that Yoon might destroy evidence if released, which influenced their decision to prolong his detention.

Yoon's unexpected declaration of martial law has been described as destabilizing, prompting widespread public outrage and a swift parliamentary response to revoke the order. He was arrested on January 15, 2025, after a lengthy operation at his official residence.
