On January 17, 2025, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated in an interview that it is time for the European Union to establish 'sanction-free' relations with Russia. He argued that the sanctions imposed due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine should be lifted, emphasizing the need for economic cooperation with Russia.

Orbán expressed concerns that a post-war Ukraine would pose a serious threat to the European economy, suggesting that Ukraine's goal of joining the EU could harm farmers across Europe. He indicated that the risks of economic collaboration with Ukraine outweigh the potential benefits.

Following Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections, Orbán urged the EU to adopt a new strategy regarding Ukraine, questioning whether Europe could independently provide financial support if U.S. military aid were to cease.

In Poland, authorities have fortified the border with Belarus amid a rise in irregular crossings. The country has constructed a 186-kilometer electronically monitored fence in response to the increasing number of migrants attempting to enter Poland, often facilitated by the Belarusian regime.

Polish border guards report that the primary challenge is irregular migration orchestrated by Belarus, with migrants arriving legally in Belarus before attempting to cross into Poland. Despite the enhanced security measures, human rights organizations have criticized Poland for allegedly undermining the rights of migrants and refugees, raising concerns about pushbacks to Belarusian territory.

Poland's government has defended its actions, stating that every border guard is required to inquire about asylum requests. However, if individuals express no desire to remain in Poland, they are returned to Belarus. As spring approaches, an increase in attempts to cross the border is anticipated.
