South Africa's Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Enhancements Aim to Boost Energy Capacity

On December 31, 2024, Eskom announced enhancements to the Koeberg nuclear power station, crucial for South Africa's energy security. Unit 2, contributing 930MW, is integral to Eskom's plan to increase capacity by 2,500MW by March 2025.

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is expected to make a decision regarding the extension of Unit 2's operational license in 2025. This follows the successful renewal of Unit 1's license, which allows it to operate until 2044.

Unit 1, also contributing 930MW, has demonstrated exceptional reliability since returning to service. Together, Units 1 and 2 will provide 1,860MW, approximately 5% of South Africa's total electricity, helping to mitigate load shedding and stabilize the power grid.
