Israel Conducts Airstrikes on Hezbollah Smuggling Routes Amid Tensions in Lebanon

On December 6, 2024, the Israeli military announced that it had conducted airstrikes targeting "smuggling routes" used by Hezbollah along the Syrian-Lebanese border. This action follows more than a week since a fragile ceasefire took effect in Lebanon.

The Israeli Air Force targeted smuggling routes and terrorist infrastructure near Syrian border crossings, specifically the al-Arida crossing, which connects Syria to northern Lebanon. Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh confirmed that the airstrikes hit two border crossings, affecting the Syrian side of the border.

The Syrian state news agency reported that the al-Arida crossing was rendered inoperable due to the Israeli strikes. Additionally, Lebanon's National News Agency stated that the airstrikes caused infrastructural damage and disrupted the road between Lebanon and Syria, which had previously undergone repairs.

In response to the ongoing Israeli attacks on border crossings, the Lebanese General Security announced the closure of these crossings until further notice to ensure the safety of travelers. However, the Masnaa border crossing remains open, especially for Syrian citizens under previously established temporary measures.

Israel has previously targeted several border crossings between Syria and Lebanon, asserting that these operations aim to prevent the transfer of weapons from Syria to Hezbollah. The latest airstrike occurred shortly after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was established on November 27, following two months of open conflict marked by daily exchanges of fire across the border.

Many nations, including the United States and European Union member states, classify Hezbollah, or its military wing, as a terrorist organization. Germany banned the group's activities on its territory in 2020, designating it as a terrorist entity.
