Israel Promises Strong Response to Hezbollah Attack Amid Ongoing Tensions

On December 2, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will respond "firmly" to the launch of two projectiles by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which targeted a disputed area along the Lebanon-Israel border. Netanyahu described the Hezbollah fire as a "serious violation" of the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing Israel's determination to uphold the truce and respond to any breaches.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz echoed this sentiment, asserting that the country would deliver a "harsh response" to the attacks. He reiterated Israel's commitment to act against any violations of the ceasefire, regardless of their severity.

The Israeli military confirmed the projectile launches, marking the first incident of this nature since the ceasefire took effect on November 27. Opposition politician Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic Party, also called for a robust response, warning that negligence could lead to disastrous long-term consequences.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as a "defensive warning" in response to what they termed repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement by Israel. Both sides have accused each other of breaching the truce, although the ceasefire remains in effect and attacks have significantly decreased.

This morning, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri accused Israel of violating the ceasefire at least 54 times and urged the committee overseeing the truce to ensure Israeli soldiers withdraw from Lebanon. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar defended Israel's actions as enforcement of the agreement, which includes the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters north of the Litani River and a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanon within 60 days.
