China Conducts Military Drills Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

On October 14, 2024, China initiated a new phase of military exercises near Taiwan, termed Joint Sword-2024B, which the Chinese Ministry of Defense described as a warning against "separatist actions by Taiwan's independence forces." The duration of these drills has not been disclosed.

The exercises aim to test the operational capabilities of joint theater command forces and are conducted in the northern, southern, and eastern areas surrounding Taiwan. Chinese naval vessels and aircraft approached Taiwan from various directions, focusing on combat readiness patrols, blockading critical ports, and targeting maritime and land objectives.

In response, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense condemned China's "irrational and provocative behavior," asserting that appropriate forces have been deployed to protect Taiwan's freedom and sovereignty. The Taiwanese government characterized the recent military drills and China's refusal to cease aggressive actions as a blatant provocation undermining regional peace and stability.

Facing increased political, military, and economic threats from China, Taiwan remains resolute, with the Taiwan-China Policy Council stating that it will not retreat or surrender. This comes after Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed a commitment to resist annexation during his National Day speech, which Beijing criticized.

The United States also condemned China's military exercises around Taiwan, labeling the actions as "unfounded and risky" and urging Beijing to exercise restraint. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed concern over the joint military maneuvers by the People's Liberation Army in the Taiwan Strait.
