China and Vietnam Strengthen Defense Cooperation Amid South China Sea Tensions

On October 13, 2024, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi, following an agreement to enhance defense cooperation despite ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The meeting marks Li's first visit to Vietnam in 11 years, coinciding with his participation in the recent ASEAN summit in Laos. During the visit, both leaders discussed increasing security ties and economic collaboration, particularly in railway development.

Vietnam maintains claims over the Paracel and Spratly Islands, which are contested by China and other nations, including the Philippines and Malaysia. This diplomatic engagement reflects Vietnam's strategy of balancing relations with major powers while safeguarding its national interests.

Li's delegation included key ministers who emphasized the importance of boosting Chinese investment in Vietnam, which is China's largest trading partner. The two countries have established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, highlighting their diplomatic ties over the past 15 years.
