EU Investigates Temu for Consumer Law Violations

The European Commission (EC) has initiated a formal investigation into the online marketplace Temu following numerous complaints regarding its consumer practices. The investigation, led by national consumer protection authorities from Belgium, Germany, and Ireland, highlights several problematic practices that allegedly violate EU consumer protection laws.

Among the identified issues are misleading discount claims, pressure tactics to encourage purchases, and the requirement for consumers to engage in promotional games to access the marketplace. Additionally, Temu has been criticized for providing incomplete information regarding consumer rights for returns and refunds, and for failing to notify consumers about minimum order values necessary to complete purchases.

The EC's scrutiny also extends to Temu's lack of transparency regarding the authenticity of product reviews and inadequate customer support for inquiries or complaints. In response to the investigation, Temu has stated its commitment to cooperating fully with regulators and addressing the identified concerns.

As part of its compliance efforts, Temu is in discussions to join a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at combating the sale of counterfeit goods online. The company emphasizes its dedication to adhering to the Digital Services Act and ensuring a safe marketplace for consumers.
