VLC Media Player is set to introduce AI-generated subtitles, a feature unveiled at CES 2025 that promises to transform user interaction with the software.
This new tool will automatically generate subtitles and provide real-time translations in multiple languages, all while functioning offline using open-source AI models.
Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of VideoLAN, highlighted that the subtitles will utilize public AI models like Meta's Llama 3.1 and Alibaba's DeepSeek, ensuring no reliance on costly cloud services.
During the demonstration, the AI-generated subtitles were showcased in languages including English, French, Hebrew, German, and Japanese, with plans to support over 100 languages in the future.
While an official release date has not yet been announced, this development marks a significant advancement in making VLC more accessible to a global audience.
