MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman has achieved a significant milestone by launching its first experimental space rocket, named "Duqm-1," on December 5. The launch took place at Etlaq Spaceport, located in Al Wusta Governorate, approximately 170 km from the Duqm Special Economic Zone.
The mission involved 15 Omani engineers and technicians who played crucial roles throughout the project, from planning to execution. Their collaboration with international partners was vital to the success of the launch.
This initiative not only demonstrates Oman's capabilities in rocket engineering but also serves as a platform to inspire a new generation of engineers in the country. The project aims to enhance national expertise and prepare Oman for future opportunities in the space sector.
His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais al Said, Founder and CEO of the National Aerospace Services Company (NASCOM), emphasized the importance of developing scalable local capabilities and establishing Oman as a reliable partner in regional and international space projects. He noted that the successful launch represented a pivotal moment for the Sultanate's technological aspirations.
Dr. Subaih bin Rahman al Saadi, Academic Adviser for Space and Astronomy Sciences, highlighted Oman's strategic location near the equator, which could reduce costs for launching rockets into various orbits. This launch marks the beginning of Oman's journey in establishing the first spaceport in the region, catering to both scientific and commercial research needs.
Looking ahead, NASCOM plans to explore additional launch missions and is currently working on the necessary technical and logistical infrastructure to support future operations.
