As of January 14, 2025, the devastating fires in California have resulted in 25 confirmed fatalities, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times. Eight individuals perished in the Palisades fire, while 17 lost their lives in the Eaton fire in Altadena, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office and Sheriff Robert Luna.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings indicating that today’s weather conditions will be particularly hazardous, with wind gusts potentially reaching 105 kilometers per hour. Southern California, particularly areas near Los Angeles, remains at high risk for fires until tomorrow, including densely populated regions such as Thousand Oaks, Northridge, and Simi Valley.

Fire Chief Kristin Crowley stated that the return of evacuees will not be a matter of days, emphasizing the priority of safety for those displaced. Crowley assured that the goal is to allow residents to return home as soon as it is safe.

Additionally, law enforcement has arrested nine individuals for looting in areas affected by the fires, and one man is under investigation for allegedly setting a fire in a park during last week’s blaze. The authorities are cracking down on looters taking advantage of the situation.

Among the victims is retired actress Dalyce Curry, known for her role in the 1980 film 'The Blues Brothers', who died at the age of 95. Her remains were discovered days after the Altadena fire destroyed her home. Her great-granddaughter announced the news on social media.

In a significant loss, a luxury home owned by Edwin Castro, the winner of the largest Powerball jackpot in history, was also destroyed in the fires. Castro had used part of his winnings to purchase properties in exclusive neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, with at least one now lost to the flames.
