Storm Conall Hits Southern England, Nov 26, 2024

The third named storm of the season, Conall, is set to impact southern England tonight, bringing up to 50mm of rain to various regions. This follows the recent effects of Storm Bert, which caused significant disruption with torrential rain over the weekend.

According to the Dutch weather service KNMI, Storm Conall is approaching with an area of low pressure. The storm is expected to deepen, resulting in strong winds across the Netherlands by Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

The UK Met Office has issued warnings for heavy rain, particularly affecting counties such as Kent, Essex, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, and London, from 10pm on Tuesday through noon on Wednesday. Southern Devon is also anticipated to experience similar weather conditions.

Communities are still recovering from the aftermath of Storm Bert, which brought winds exceeding 80mph, leading to extensive flooding and road closures. The Met Office has indicated that more flooding is likely this week, with additional heavy rain forecasted alongside a drop in temperatures.

Environment Secretary Steve Reed noted that the impacts of Conall are expected to be less severe compared to the conditions experienced during Storm Bert. As of Tuesday evening, over 90 flood warnings and 120 flood alerts remain active across the UK, with a severe flood warning still in effect at Billing Aquadrome holiday park next to the River Nene in Northampton.

In Wales, four flood warnings and six alerts were reported, while Scotland has not issued any warnings at this time. The naming of storms is a collaborative effort between KNMI, the UK Met Office, and Ireland's Met Eireann to enhance communication regarding severe weather.
