Senegal is undertaking significant reforestation initiatives to address environmental challenges, including deforestation and climate change. These efforts aim to restore degraded lands, enhance biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of local communities.
In July 2025, the Senegalese government and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the Scaling-Up Resilience in Africa’s Great Green Wall (SURAGGWA) project. This initiative focuses on restoring 1.4 million hectares of degraded land, reducing carbon emissions, and improving the living conditions of approximately 1.9 million people, particularly women and youth. The project is part of a broader regional effort to combat desertification and promote sustainable land management across the Sahel region.
Additionally, the "One Tree, One Inhabitant" program, a collaboration between the French department of Isère and the Boundou Community Natural Reserve in eastern Senegal, has been recognized for its impact. This initiative focuses on large-scale reforestation to combat climate change and support local communities in adapting to environmental changes. The program exemplifies how regional partnerships can drive effective climate action.
These initiatives reflect Senegal's commitment to environmental restoration and community resilience, contributing to the global effort to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
