Cameroon’s Wildlife: Stable Populations of Elephants and Great Apes in the Southeast

A recent study conducted by WWF in collaboration with Cameroon’s Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife has revealed stable populations of forest elephants and great apes in the southeastern regions of the country. The research, which focused on the Boumba Bek and Nki National Parks, estimates the population of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) at approximately 1,004 individuals, while great apes, including gorillas and chimpanzees, number around 19,472 individuals.

Encouraging Results Amid Ongoing Threats

While the results are promising, conservationists warn of persistent threats, including poaching and habitat degradation, which continue to place pressure on the region's biodiversity.

The study highlights that the density of forest elephants in the national parks is higher than in nearby logging areas. However, it still falls short compared to other protected areas in the Congo Basin.

Significant Growth in Chimpanzee Population

One of the most notable findings of the study is a threefold increase in the chimpanzee population in Nki National Park compared to previous estimates. This growth underscores the critical importance of protected areas in supporting wildlife recovery.

The Need for Strengthened Conservation Efforts

WWF Cameroon’s Director of Conservation, Gilles Etoga, emphasized that the region’s biodiversity remains under significant pressure from illegal wildlife trade and human activity. There is a particular urgency to combat poaching, especially to curb the illegal ivory trade.

Engaging local communities and implementing sustainable management practices are essential for the long-term protection of these species and their habitats.

🌍 This study serves as a reminder of the fragility of ecosystems and the importance of sustained conservation efforts to secure a future for elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees in the heart of Africa.
