In a remarkable discovery for biodiversity, researchers have identified a new species of frog, Nyctimantis diadorim, in Brazil's Cerrado region. Professor Reuber Brandão, a biologist and ecologist from the University of Brasília, highlighted the significance of this finding. He emphasized that while many believe discovering new species is challenging, there is still much to learn about biodiversity. The Nyctimantis diadorim is characterized by its unique coloration and skull structure, and it is endemic to the Cerrado, a region that has suffered extensive deforestation. Brandão pointed out that more than 50% of the Cerrado has been destroyed, raising concerns that many species may have already gone extinct before being documented.
Brandão also noted that the naming of the species pays homage to Diadorim, a character from the renowned Brazilian novel 'Grande Sertão: Veredas.' This connection underscores the intertwined nature of culture and conservation.
