UNGA Calls for 2025 Conference on Rohingya Crisis Resolution

On November 20, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution to hold a high-level conference in 2025 aimed at developing a time-bound plan for the sustainable resolution of the Rohingya crisis.

This initiative responds to the ongoing humanitarian situation involving over a million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, stemming from the 2017 military crackdown by Myanmar.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, recently appointed High Representative for Rohingya Affairs, emphasized the need to revitalize international focus on the crisis, which he described as having been sidelined in recent years. He highlighted the importance of restoring momentum in global discourse surrounding the plight of the Rohingya.

Dr. Rahman acknowledged the changing dynamics in Myanmar's Rakhine State, where the balance of power has shifted between the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army. He indicated that these developments necessitate a cautious approach as Bangladesh navigates its response.

The UNGA conference, proposed by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during the 79th UNGA in September, aims to review the crisis comprehensively and propose innovative and concrete solutions, including the safe and dignified return of Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar.

Despite Myanmar's agreement to accept the refugees, previous repatriation efforts have failed due to safety concerns among the Rohingya. Dr. Rahman reiterated that the return of Rohingyas to their home in Rakhine is the only viable solution to the crisis.

The humanitarian situation remains critical, with Bangladesh relying on continued support from Western nations, which have been key contributors to aid for the displaced population.
