Israel Threatens War Against Hezbollah Amid Tensions Over Ceasefire Agreement

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on November 28, 2024, that the military is prepared for intensive warfare against Hezbollah in Lebanon if the group violates the ceasefire agreement extensively. This statement came less than 48 hours after the ceasefire commenced.

Netanyahu stated, "If there is a major violation of the agreement, we will not only operate surgically as we are doing now," emphasizing the need for military readiness. He indicated that the ceasefire in Lebanon could be short-lived, asserting that Israel enforced it on the first day.

The ceasefire agreement allows both Israel and Lebanon to exercise their right to self-defense under international law. Netanyahu previously mentioned that Israel would maintain full military action freedom in Lebanon with the understanding of the United States.

Lebanese authorities have expressed opposition to any infringement on their sovereignty. Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged international pressure on Israel during a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, claiming Israel violated the agreement through air incursions and attacks.

On the ground, the Israeli military accused Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire conditions, confirming attacks on suspected militants and military targets in southern Lebanon. The agreement, brokered by the United States and France, includes an initial two-month ceasefire, during which Hezbollah is to withdraw north of the Litani River, allowing Israeli forces to leave Lebanon and paving the way for Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers along the border.
