WikiTok, a novel web service launched in 2025, reimagines Wikipedia through the lens of TikTok's user experience. Developed by Isaac Gemal, it presents Wikipedia articles in a format reminiscent of the short-video platform, offering users an endless scroll of random information.
Users navigate articles with the familiar swipe gesture, encountering diverse topics in no particular order. Each entry features a background image and a link to the full Wikipedia article. While accessible on desktops, WikiTok shines on mobile devices, mimicking the vertical scrolling experience of TikTok. Despite the name, the service uses images, not videos, focusing on the content discovery method.
According to Ars Technica, WikiTok provides an elegant way to discover interesting information randomly and learn new things without using algorithmically addictive social media apps. Gemal developed WikiTok in under two hours using AI coding tools from Anthropic, and has made the code open source on GitHub.
