Cybersecurity Alert: QR Code Risks

The Cyber Police of Mexico City warns citizens about the rising risks associated with QR codes. While these codes offer quick access to information and services, they have also attracted cybercriminals who exploit them to steal personal and financial data.

QR codes can store vast amounts of information, directing users to websites, apps, or other actions when scanned. However, malicious actors can create fake QR codes that lead victims to fraudulent sites or download harmful software. These fraudulent sites often mimic legitimate ones, designed to harvest sensitive information like passwords and credit card numbers.

To mitigate these risks, the Cyber Police recommend verifying the source of a QR code before scanning, using secure scanning applications, avoiding codes from unsolicited emails or messages, and ensuring the URL is legitimate. Keeping devices and security apps updated is crucial, as is refraining from entering personal information on suspicious sites.

The Cyber Police emphasize that staying informed and cautious is key to preventing QR code-related cybercrimes. For assistance, citizens can contact the Cyber Police Unit at 55 5242 5100 ext. 5086 or via email at policia.cibernetica@ssc.cdmx.gob.mx.
