UK Launches Second Round of Manchester Prize to Boost AI Innovations in Clean Energy

The UK government has launched the second round of the Manchester Prize, inviting innovators, academics, start-ups, and entrepreneurs to apply for funding aimed at decarbonising the energy grid and enhancing energy security.

Over the next eight weeks, applicants can propose solutions that improve the UK's clean energy infrastructure, reduce energy demand, and enhance efficiency. The competition also welcomes international partnerships with UK-based organisations.

Key areas of focus include utilizing AI to optimize energy efficiency in homes and businesses, as well as predicting future energy demand spikes. This initiative coincides with the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan, where the role of technology, including AI, in addressing climate change is a major topic.

AI Minister Feryal Clark emphasized the transformative potential of AI in public services and productivity, stating, "The second round of the Manchester Prize will bring brilliant British innovation to bear to deliver the UK's clean energy future."

Launched in December 2023, the Manchester Prize reflects the UK’s decade-long commitment to supporting AI innovations that address societal challenges. Round 2 will specifically focus on AI for Clean Energy Systems, with up to ten innovators receiving £100,000 each. A grand prize of £1 million will be awarded to the final winner.

Applications for Round 2 must be submitted by January 17, 2025, with ten finalists announced in spring 2025.
