Mason Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, has made the decision to represent Jamaica after having played just one match for the England national team. Following his indefinite suspension by the English Football Association due to allegations of rape and assault, Greenwood has completed the necessary formalities to be eligible for the Jamaican national team, known as the Reggae Boyz.
Greenwood’s administrative transition to Jamaica comes after the FA's announcement that he would no longer be selected for England. The 23-year-old player faced serious allegations three years ago, which were later withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service when the alleged victim, his current partner, retracted her complaint. Despite having rejuvenated his career at Getafe and now Marseille, the FA's stance left Greenwood with no option but to seek a new international opportunity.
Having played his sole England selection prior to turning 21, Greenwood is eligible to switch national teams. Jamaica is scheduled to play two World Cup qualifying matches in June, where Greenwood is expected to make his debut under coach Steve McClaren. However, there are concerns from Marseille about releasing him for these friendly matches due to their significance.
