Paris's Iconic Centre Pompidou to Close for Five Years of Renovations Starting in 2025

Paris's iconic Centre Pompidou will close its doors for five years starting in 2025 to undergo an ambitious renovation plan. The project aims to modernize the building and adapt it to the demands of the 21st century.

Opened in 1977, the Centre Pompidou's revolutionary design, featuring exposed pipes and structures on its facade, challenged the historical architectural norms of Paris. The upcoming renovation will preserve its iconic DNA while addressing technical challenges such as asbestos removal, energy inefficiency, and the need for stricter security measures.

The renovation, estimated at €260 million, will focus on technical improvements and a comprehensive cultural reinvention. Moreau Kusunoki, an architectural firm, has been entrusted with the project, redesigning both the interior and exterior of the building.

Plans include creating a new panoramic deck on the roof, developing a "new generation" hub for children, and revitalizing the vast underground space for new cultural initiatives. The architects also aim for a more fluid design.

During the renovation, the Bibliothèque publique d'information (BPI) and other cultural activities will be temporarily relocated to the Lumière building in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. Performances will continue in other locations, such as the Grand Palais.
