14th-Century Archbishop's Seal Discovered in Denmark

A metal detector enthusiast has uncovered a 14th-century seal belonging to Archbishop Esger Juul of Lund in a field in Western Jutland, Denmark. The discovery, reported on January 21, 2025, marks the 700th anniversary of the archbishop's death on January 17, 1325.

The oval seal features an image of Saint Francis of Assisi, depicted in a long robe with arms raised and hands extended. It includes a suspension element, indicating it was worn as a pendant, a common practice for ensuring the security of legal signatures.

The inscription reads: 'S' ESGERI FILII NICHOLAI IUUL DE DACIA,' which translates to 'Seal of Esger, Son of Nielsen Juul of Denmark.' Esger's father, Niels, was a Jutland aristocrat and a member of the medieval Danish parliament, Danehof, who supported King Eric V during disputes with Duke Valdemar IV of Schleswig.

Esger Juul entered the church at a young age and later supported King Eric VI in his conflict with Archbishop Jens Grand. His successful mediation led to his appointment as Bishop of Aarhus in 1306 and subsequently as the head of the Danish Church.

Throughout his tenure, Esger traveled extensively in Denmark and abroad, which is reflected in the seal's reference to his Danish nationality. The seal was found in the parish of Dejbjerg, located between Ringkjobing and Skjern, suggesting a possible connection to Esger's origins.

In 1310, Esger Juul donated all his properties in the Skast district to the canons of Ribe, and in 1312, he gifted three farms in the same area to Ribe Cathedral.

Michelle Wolch Staffe, an archaeologist and curator at the Western Jutland Museums, noted that the exact origins of Esger Juul's family remain unclear, but the seal indicates a potential link to this region. She emphasized the historical significance of Western Jutland, stating, 'This area has seen considerable activity across various historical periods, making it intriguing if Esger Juul had ties to it.'
