Ancient Cosmic Filament Captured in High-Definition Image

Bewerkt door: Uliana S.

Researchers compiled hundreds of astronomical observations into a high-resolution image of a cosmic filament connecting two galaxies from when the universe was 2 billion years old. The 3-million-light-year structure was imaged using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. The image reveals the filament's morphology and density, aligning with models of dark matter distribution. The Euclid space telescope will provide more data on the cosmic web's structure.
