In a significant initiative to protect and enhance coastal ecosystems, Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ) has launched 49 community development programs across Indonesia's coastal regions in 2024. One standout initiative, the Jam Pasir program, has notably improved local livelihoods through ecotourism, generating an impressive Rp 142 million annually.

These programs, spanning an area of 8,300 square kilometers across seven regions, are designed based on four key pillars: health, economy, environment, and education. R. Ery Ridwan, Head of Communication, Relations & CID at PHE ONWJ, emphasized that the organization aims to create a positive impact on surrounding communities while contributing to the energy sector.

The Jam Pasir program, located in Sukajaya Village, Karawang, focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation. It successfully addressed coastal erosion, restoring 3.62 hectares of lost land, and fostering a thriving mangrove forest with over 47,000 planted trees, which now supports 28 species of flora and 52 species of fauna. Additionally, the program has reduced carbon emissions by 18.3 tons, equivalent to mitigating air pollution from burning used tires.

Economically, Jam Pasir has positively impacted local ecotourism, increasing revenue for small businesses to Rp 52 million per year. The program has also fostered a shift in local attitudes, with community members recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship and children gaining knowledge about disaster preparedness.

PHE ONWJ's 49 CSR programs encompass various initiatives, from utilizing crab shell waste to addressing stunting, improving educational access, and tackling climate change. These efforts align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global agenda aimed at eradicating poverty and protecting the environment by 2030.

Through partnerships with local governments and universities, PHE ONWJ aims to ensure the sustainability and success of these programs. The organization hopes that these initiatives will provide lasting benefits in improving quality of life and preserving the environment, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the SDGs in Indonesia.
