Urgent Measures to Protect the Saladares del Guadalentín: A Critical Habitat for Steppe Birds

On November 2, 2024, the regional government of Murcia announced a significant initiative to enhance the protected natural space of the Saladares del Guadalentín, located in the municipality of Alhama de Murcia. This area is part of the Natura 2000 network, which aims to conserve Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

The project entails an investment of €46,536, aimed at waste removal, improving access points, and controlling invasive plant species. The Saladares del Guadalentín is recognized as one of the region's most unique wetlands, providing an essential habitat for steppe birds.

Efforts will focus on cleaning six hectares of land, with activities extending over a two-kilometer radius, particularly in the areas of El Siscarejo and La Chorrera, where waste has been identified.

To regulate activities that could impact this protected area, 42 bollards will be installed along its boundaries. These 60-centimeter high posts will span 410 linear meters to manage the flow of people and vehicles.

Furthermore, the initiative includes the removal of invasive species, particularly Nicotiana glauca (moro tobacco) and Opuntia maxima (prickly pear). Authorities anticipate the removal of up to 25 tons of these invasive plants, adding to the 40 tons already collected from previous waste incidents.

Finally, new signage will be installed throughout the protected natural area to raise awareness and promote conservation efforts among visitors.
